I have to be honest. I dont actually measure any ingredient out for this recipe and although my gran used to cook me crumbles all the time I never really paid attention about how to make them. Also I have never read a a crumble recipe. My husband doesn’t complain and this does seem to taste and be a a crumble very similar to my grans and Matts mums. So will call it a crumble.
Because I am a lazy sausage I “rub in” my vegan margarine (vitalite in my case) using my kenwood chef food processor. This produces a finer crumb unlike a traditional crumble. If you want a thicker more traditional crumble topping do it by hand to produce bigger “crunchy crumbs”. Sometimes I add a few tablespoons of granola to the crumble topping mixture. Ps this usually makes too much crumble topping for 1 crumble as I over estimate.
4 bramley apples peeled cored sliced
2 tablespoons cornflour
2 tablespoons water
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup flour
4 tablespoons vegan margarine
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 cup oats
a couple of dots of butter for the top of the crumble.
Prehat the oven to gas mark 6. In a pyrex or enamel dish place the sliced apples. Mix the water with the cornflour , pour over the apples. Mix the brown sugar and the cinnamon together and sprinkle over the apples.
In a food processor (or by hand) add the sugar, flour and margarine. Wizz until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. In a separate bowl mix the flour and margarine mixture with the oats until well combined. Sprinkle this mixture over the apples in the dish.
Dot with a little butter and put in the oven for roughly 35 minutes until golden brown on the top serve with custard ice, ice cream or whatever takes your fancy. Ps birds custard powder is vegan simply mix with soya milk to make a quick custard.
